Regrettably, due to the ongoing COVID situation, the decision was been made to cancel our Prize Presentation for 2021.
This is the second year in succession that the event has been cancelled, it’s disappointing because this is an important event in the club’s diary, an evening to celebrate the achievements of our members and to share in their success.
In the absence of the Presentation Evening, the Competitions Committee has produced a presentation video with the details of the prizes that would have been awarded during the evening.
Girl Power secured a fabulous first when our CGC quintet became the only all-girl team to win the Derbyshire County Junior Championship.
Olivia Barker-Sabido, Lucia Maturi, Olivia Streets, Gabby Auld and Eva Myers claimed a fantastic victory in the handicap final against Breadsall Priory A team at Kedleston Park Golf Club on Sunday.
The five friends have grown up playing the game together and hold handicap indexes ranging from 4.9 to 15.8.
We’ve great strength in depth in our junior section and this year organiser John Barker decided to send the girls into the competition on their own rather than entering two mixed teams as in previous years.
And the departure from the norm paid off handsomely when 14-year-old Gabby showed nerves of steel to hole a 12-foot putt on the last green to secure victory over a very strong Breadsall five.
It was a fitting end to a thrilling fightback with Chesterfield having trailed in three of the four matches during their early stages.
Gabby’s victory added to a win for Lucia and a half for Club Junior Captain Olivia Streets…. and the trophy was ours!
The final triumph followed a quarter final win against Burton and a semi-final victory over Breadsall Priory’s B team.
Steve Myers, who has done an outstanding job managing the team, said: “They are great golfers but also great friends and it’s been a pleasure to watch them having so much fun.
“I’m so proud of not only the way they have played, but also how they have conducted themselves throughout the competition especially as they were a lot younger than the majority of the other teams.
“The challenge of playing older more experienced golfers and ‘beating the boys’ just never daunted them at all.”
Prize winners came from far and wide in our Senior Men’s Open Competition.
Rushcliffe GC four Allan Tubb, Paul Bartram, Jeff Aston and Richard Pike shot a fabulous 91pts to take first prize.
They topped the Tapton Park GC quartet of David Hoult, Alan Baddams, Brian Fischer and Martin Andrews who had led for most of the day after being first to tee off and carding 88 points.
Other prize winners were:
3rd place – 87pts Mal Pitchforth, Steve Hurdus, Ricky Aams, and Dave Griffiths (City of Wakefield GC)
